4x5 film holders: I recommend a minimum of 6 Lisco or Fidelity 4x5 film holders per student, if you have more it will make your life easier. You must have these Film Holders the first week of class. Film holders do NOT come with your camera package (provided by the college). They are very expensive $$$. You can look for them on ebay and online stores that sell used equipment. Do not buy the wooden film holders. Compare prices from store to store and shop wisely. You get 2 shots per holder so the more holders you have the more film you can shoot it is worth it to have at least 6 holders. You can always sell them after the course if you feel you will never use them again.
Film: 4x5 black and white sheet film. Plan on shooting a minimum of 100 sheets of film. To be purchased from later in quarter, 8x10 sheet film. Optional: 4x5 color film for the final project only.
Paper: Black and white, variable contrast fiber based paper. ONLY contact sheets may be on RC paper prints for class must be on variable contrast fiber based paper. You are encouraged to try a variety of papers and sizes 8x10-16x20 for the midterm. Finals can be color using the RA4 digital printing or inkjet printing.
Lupe Magnifier: for focusing through the back of the camera.
Level: small hand held level for leveling the camera.
Dark Cloth: at least 3x5 feet black is best (you can make your own or purchase one). A large Black T-Shirt works great.
Processing: Film processing: Thermometer, Towel. Printing: full set of contrast filters for printing.
Clips: little black metal clips (office supply) for hanging film to dry
4x5 Negative Sleeves
Finishing Materials: Negative cleaning, Spotting and any materials to present work professionally.
Technical Notebook: This will be used for recording camera exposures and film processing. This is required and will be looked at during midterm conference if it is not needed sooner due to technical difficulties.
Portfolio Box: to contain your Midterm and final Portfolio. THIS IS REQUIRED.
Light Meter: a hand held light meter is best. Your 35mm camera's meter is usable but not ideal. I suggest you try to purchase a light meter through the educational programs offered. Information about this program can be seen at www.macgroupus.com
